ONDURA/METAL COMPARISON

We know that selecting a new roofing system is not easy. There are many options available and, like most other building products, each roofing system has its own pros and cons. In order to help you as you begin your evaluation, we offer here some thoughts and comparisons that you might find helpful.

Metal roofing is generally regarded as one of the most resilient roofing products offered, though it does have some downsides. It is generally expensive and has to be installed and maintained by professionals. Metal roofing conducts heat, which can radiate to areas below, increasing cooling costs. Also, side and end-laps, as well as fastener holes are vulnerable to leaks from expansion and contraction. Metal is also prone to rust.

The benefits of Ondura vary based on whether it is used in new roofing or re-roofing applications (see below):

New Roofing:

  • Ondura costs less than painted metal roofing panels . . . and is often less expensive than unpainted galvanized metal roofing

  • Can be installed over open purlins (non-residential structures without interior ceilings, such as barns or sheds) or solid decking

  • Unlike metal, Ondura is guaranteed to never rust

  • Much quieter than metal . . . actually dulls the sound of rain, wind and hail

  • Ondura is simpler to install than metal roofing, and there are no sharp edges. It is also more flexible in “truing up” the roof line

  • Ondura is less prone to condensation or corrosion . . . particularly when subjected to fertilizers, chemicals and animal confinement

  • Ondura is covered by one of the best warranties in the business

Re-Roofing:

  • Ondura is less expensive than painted metal roofing . . . and often less expensive than unpainted galvanized metal roofing

  • In order to re-roof, metal often requires the removal of the existing roof; Ondura can be installed over a variety of existing roofing, including shingles (up to 2 layers), metal, and wood

  • No sharp edges, and no special tools are required; can easily be installed by maintenance staff or crew

  • Ondura is thermally neutral, meaning that it won’t react negatively with other surfaces (no corrosion or deterioration) and it won’t conduct heat like metal

  • Ondura is covered by one of the best warranties in the business
