ONDURA/SHINGLE COMPARISON

We know that selecting a new roofing system is not easy. There are many options available and, like most other building products, each roofing system has its own pros and cons. In order to help you as you begin your evaluation, we offer here some thoughts and comparisons that you might find helpful.

Though traditionally one of the most popular roofing products, shingles aren’t without their drawbacks. They have a relatively short lifespan, and they require solid decking (and possibly removal of the existing roofing) for installation. They can experience thermal shock with drastic temperature changes, which causes the shingle to rip or tear. Shingles can also blow off when subjected to high wind speeds.

The benefits of Ondura vary based on whether it is used in new roofing or re-roofing applications (see below):

New Roofing:

  • Ondura is often less expensive than high-grade shingles

  • Ondura has a Lifetime Limited Warranty; most shingles offer only 20-30 year warranties

  • Can be installed over open purlins (non-residential structures without interior ceilings, such as barns or sheds) or solid decking

  • Ondura has a distinctive appearance and can be repainted to change the color

Re-Roofing:

  • Unlike shingles, Ondura can be applied over existing roofs including shingles (up to 2 layers), metal, and wood . . . without a tear-off

  • Eliminates the time, expense and landfill costs associated with disposing of an existing roof

  • Does not overburden the roof structure like the heavy weight of shingles

  • Ondura can easily be repainted to change the look of the roof

  • Ondura is backed by the industry’s only Lifetime Limited Warranty
